Andhra Pradesh Health Minister directs medical colleges to check ragging

Andhra Pradesh health minister Vidadala Rajini along with Director of Medical Education Dr Vinod Kumar, Dr YSR University of Health Sciences Vice Chancellor Dr K. Babji, Registrar Dr V. Radhika Reddy and others, held an evaluation meeting with the directors of medical colleges, in Mangalagiri on February 28, 2023. The health minister directed the Director of Medical Education and VC of the Dr YSR University of Health Sciences to monitor the anti-ragging committees and review the situation regularly.

She asked the medical colleges to set up a 24/7 helpline for the students to report instances of theft, ragging, and other issues. The meeting was held to discuss the welfare of students in wake of the death of a PG medical student in Telangana.

Vidadala Rajini advised that the students must be given all options such as complaint boxes and helplines to contact higher authorities. She asked the university management to install surveillance cameras at important locations on the campuses. “There should be separate times for lodging and dining for the seniors and juniors in hostels,” she said.

“There are reports of doctors abusing PG students for their private clinics. No student should be overloaded with work. Advice centres and yoga centres should be set up on the campuses,” said the minister, as reported by Finance Time.

She also asked medical colleges to remain vigilant for unlawful activities on their respective campuses.

The health minister also said that every medical college should implement the District Residence Program as part of which every PG student would have to work in a rural clinic for at least three months. With this program, 250 speciality physicians will be available in rural areas across the state.
