Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled several infrastructure projects at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has inaugurated multiple infrastructure projects at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

He tweeted, "As part of our initiative to transform @gmchgauhati into a world-class healthcare centre, pleased to inaugurate new infrastructure, including a new auditorium, Principal’s residence, attendants’ guest house, boys’ hostel and nurses quarters."

Among the buildings inaugurated by Himanta Biswa Sarma is a 156-bedded guest house, built under corporate social responsibility (CSR) funding from Power Grid Corporation of India Limited. Also, a state-of-the-art 450-seat capacity college auditorium built with partial financial support from Oil India Limited, a new addition to Hostel number- 4, a nurses’ quarter and the Principal’s residential quarter was also opened by Mr Sarma, as reported by NDTV.

"The new facilities will help the GMCH perform its varied roles, from being a medical college to a hospital, more efficiently. It will also go a long way in helping the government realise its long-term plans for GMCH," he said during the inauguration.

He also announced that the GMCH’s students’ longstanding demand for a playground will be taken up on a priority basis.

About the new medical college in Guwahati, he added, "the city getting two Medical Colleges will ensure better resource utilisation and hassle-free treatment for patients."

Recently, Assam government has collaborated with private company Bright Star Investments Pvt. Ltd. for the infrastructure development of the academic block of the second medical college in Guwahati. An agreement was inked for this alliance and the private company is providing INR 150 crore as a CSR contribution.
