Assam: Dental college's 14 students suspended from hostel over ragging complaint

In yet another incident of ragging in the state, Assam's government dental college in Silchar has suspended as many as 14 senior students from the hostel. However, these students are allowed to attend the classes.

"There was no report of physical torture, but the complaint was taken seriously as it was linked to ragging and harassment on campus," said an official, as reported by TOI.

As per the Hindustan Times report, the decision to suspend these students from the hostel was taken based on a complaint filed by the 20 first-year students on December 1. The first-year students complained to the University Grants Commission (UGC). The college’s Anti-Ragging Monitoring unit received the complaint from UGC and inquired into the allegations.

The principal of the dental college, Manjula Das, said, “They named seniors from different years in the complaint and we immediately identified the accused. They have been expelled from the hostel for six months since the junior students hadn’t been assaulted.”

“The punishment is defined based on the intensity of the crime and in this case, the victims were not physically assaulted. We haven’t stopped the accused from attending the classes but they won’t be able to stay in the hostel,” the principal added.

Recently in another ragging case at Dibrugarh University, four students are rusticated from the university for three years and 18 others are expelled for their alleged involvement in the incident.
