To strengthen the medical education and healthcare infrastructure in the state, the Assam government has announced 14 more medical colleges by 2025.

Lately, the Assam government is focussing on upgrading its healthcare infrastructure and has taken several steps in this direction. The latest is the state government has announced as many as 14 new medical colleges by 2025.

While inaugurating the Lakhimpur Medical College & Hospital (LMHC) on February 15, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the completion of the construction of six medical colleges. He said that Dhubri Medical College and Hospital will be completed by 2023 and in 2024 other medical colleges at Nalbari, Tinsukia and Kokrajhar will be completed. The medical college and hospitals at Charaideo and Biswanath are to be completed by 2025.

Moreover, the foundation of 5 medical colleges will be laid in 2022 at Golaghat, Dhemaji, Morigaon, Baksa, Bongaigaon, and Tamulpur, two more foundations of medical colleges will be laid at Karimganj and Sivasagar in 2023, and in Goalpara in the year 2024. 

He also added that a cancer hospital is being constructed in every existing medical college hospital and these will be unveiled by April 2022, as reported by Gplus.

Himanta's comments during LHMC inauguration

At the inauguration of LHMC, Sarma said, "This college would be upgraded to postgraduate level in the coming days to meet the need of super-speciality doctors. The government is working to introduce post graduate medical education in other medical colleges in the state which are at the moment imparting graduate level degrees."

"In the next financial year, State government will set up five more medical colleges in different districts, a Cancer hospital will also be built at Lakhimpur along with a Dental College and B. Sc Nursing institute," he added. Stating his government's commitment, the Chief Minister said that in the coming years all the villages in Assam will have at least two doctors as the State government is working towards that end.
