BFUHS VC Dr Raj Bahadur resigns; Two doctors step down from posts

On Friday, Punjab Health Minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra forced BFUHS Vice-Chancellor Dr Raj Bahadur to lie down on a damaged mattress in front of staff and patients after which the VC resigned from his post.

Dr Raj Bahadur, the vice-chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) has submitted his resignation to the chief minister’s office after the state Health Minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra forced him to lie down on a damaged mattress in front of staff and patients at a hospital during an inspection.

After the incident, two more doctors serving as principal-director and medical superintendent put in their papers and requested that they be relieved of their posts, as reported by Indian Express.

The decision taken by the director-principal Dr Rajiv Kumar Devgan and medical superintendent Dr KD Singh is being seen as a protest against the humiliating treatment meted out to Dr Raj Bahadur.

A video of the Minister “forcibly asking the Vice-Chancellor to lie on the bed” has been doing the rounds.

The Minister can be “heard speaking rudely” with the Vice-Chancellor over the lack of cleanliness in the medical college.

IMA condemns the treatment of VC by the minister

The press release by Indian Medical Association (IMA) reads, "Indian Medical Association strongly condemns the derogatory action by the Punjab Health Minister who humiliated Dr Raj Bahadur, Vice Chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences on July 29, 2022. It is not only humiliation for the respected Vice Chancellor Dr Raj Bahadur, but entire Medical Fraternity across India has been insulted."
