The Centre has lifted the ban on admissions at Hazaribagh and Palamau medical colleges and allowed admissions to 200 MBBS seats in the coming academic session.

Jharkhand Health Minister Banna Gupta has announced that the Centre has lifted the ban on admissions at Hazaribagh and Palamau medical colleges, freeing up 200 MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) seats for the coming academic session, 2021-22.

“We are happy that after regular follow ups and requests of the state government, the Centre has finally agreed to lift the ban. Soon, both the medical colleges will start admitting students in 100 seats each the for 2021-22 session," the minister said, as reported by The Telegraph.

“In all the three colleges where the ban has been lifted, the health department is actively working to sort out issues of manpower, faculty, libraries and laboratories. The lifting of the ban will be helpful for medical aspirants in our state,” he added.

After the announcement came in, several medical students met with the Health Minister at his residence to thank him.

Earlier, the National Medical Commission (NMC) had banned admissions at these two medical colleges and also at Dumka in October-November last year due to poor infrastructure and shortage of faculty. Now, the health minister has also confirmed that apart from upgrading the facilities, the state government is also focussing on hiring faculty on contract on a war footing.

This year, in October, NMC had allowed admissions in Dumka Medical College after it submitted an affidavit stating that it will address all the issues within the given time. All these colleges were established during the earlier BJP regime led by Raghubar Das and were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

With the latest developments, the state is back to offering 300 MBBS seats for the 2021-22 academic session.
