As per the latest updates, the centre may approve the move to hold medical entrance National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) twice a year from the next academic year.

Recently, after four attempts in a year for attending JEE(Joint Entrance Examination)-Main was announced by the Education Minister, the demand for giving multiple attempts to NEET aspirants were growing louder.

The talks were going on and earlier Union Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health and family welfare held discussions to conduct NEET twice a year from this session itself but it did not yield out any positive outcome.

Vineet Joshi, director general (DG) of the National Testing Agency (NTA), has told a news agency that the discussions are still going on and the matter is under active consideration, however, NEET twice a year is expected from next academic year only.

Until now, the NEET exams are conducted only once a year. It is held in a pen and paper mode and offline mode for admission to various medical colleges.

Several medical aspirants have been requesting the Education Ministry to provide more attempts to NEET as the government is providing for the JEE Mains. The discussions were started when Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank was Union Education Minister.

The Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) had written a letter to Ramesh Pokhriyal seeking multiple attempts at NEET.

“It is heartening to see that the National Testing Agency will be conducting the JEE for engineering institutions four times this year, giving each student multiple attempts to give their best possible performance, and also allowing for students impacted by health and other concerns to skip a test without having to drop a whole year. A similar decision must be taken for other “high-stakes” exams, including at least NEET and CLAT for medical and law colleges respectively," the SIO wrote in the letter.
