All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur was established in 2018 under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY). Shiksha spoke to the Director of AIIMS, Nagpur Maj Gen (Dr) Vibha Dutta, here are the excerpts from the interview:
Q. What are the challenges and opportunities of heading an institution like AIIMS? What are your priority areas?
A. The big challenge is that it is a new set up and AIIMS, Nagpur is starting from the scratch and hence it is a major challenge to set up all the departments, staff, equipment, building, so many things are to be done together. It has been only three years, so we are still growing. The priority area is to satisfy my clientele and give them the best we have.
Q. How did the academic activities of AIIMS, Nagpur got affected due to the pandemic?
A. As others have managed the online classes the same thing was going on with us. The students went off home and we were conducting online classes, online tests. So, it was difficult as we functioned this way for the first time and also we were not very satisfied with this as being a doctor one needs to check the patient to understand the condition and not decide by just reading the theories. Hence, at least for the medical profession, this is not good to have online classes and online examinations.
Q. Several states are increasing the number of medical colleges, how does this will impact the admissions and seat allocation process? Is AIIMS Nagpur also planning to increase the number of seats?
A. No, we are not increasing the number of seats. Whatever we have we will carry on with that only.
Q. The National Medical Commission (NMC) is intending to replace NEET-PG, FMGE and MBBS finals with National Exit Exam (NeXT), how do you see this and what changes will it bring?
A. I think in the beginning it will be a real no-no for everyone because no one is used to it but I think gradually, we all will settle down with this and will get used to this new system.
Q. The Centre has approved a 27% OBC reservation in AIQ for MBBS/BDS admission from the current academic year 2021-22, how will it impact the seat matrix?
A. We have to change the seat matrix all over again. We can’t help it, we have to give 27% OBC reservation.
Q. What would you like to say about the nationwide strike of resident doctors due to delay in NEET PG 2021 counselling?
A. It is really sad as it becomes a zero year because there has been no admission in NEET at all in UG and PG courses. It is very sad that students have lost one year and it is really not good for medical education. Next year, students will face a lot of pressure as the next examination is coming and the results are still not announced. The next NEET PG exam is on 12 March and in January and February the result might come out, I don’t know exactly. Students are depressed that they have lost one year and as an administrator, I think we have lost the resident doctors to work in the hospitals, we are also losing strength, if the doctors would have come we could have a large number of doctors to support us. Overall it is a sad state.
