DMC's President urges Centre to resolve FMGs internship issues soon
Dr Arun Gupta, the President of the Delhi Medical Council said that scores of Foreign Medical Graduates were left in the lurch after the reduction in the number of seats for CMRI. Hardly any seat is being offered by medical colleges in Delhi and total ambiguity about the stipend, hence a more proactive response is expected from the NMC and union health ministry.
While Foreign Medical Graduates of India are demanding more internship opportunities, the President of the Delhi Medical Council, Dr Arun Gupta said that the National Medical Council and union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya should respond proactively to the issues faced by the FMGs.
His tweet reads, "We expect a more proactive response from @nmc and @mansukhmandviya. Thousands of FMGs left on lurch after reduction in number of seats for CMRI. Hardly any seats are being offered by institutions and total ambiguity about stipend. DMC have been trying to reach u ppl but even that’s not happening. Please look into matter as it’s pertains to life and career of many young graduates."

DMC has also written to the health minister and highlighted that NMC in its letter dated Feb 24, 2023, stated that a total of 339 seats are available for FMGs CRMI in 10 recognized and approved medical colleges of Delhi and the same is available on the official website of NMC. However, despite this notification, only a few medical colleges in Delhi have agreed to provide the internship to FMGs.
Recently, in a meeting, AIIMS representatives confirmed that AIIMS is a statutory autonomous body and does not come under the preview of NMC and they can not offer CRMI to FMGs, which was further notified by NMC. Also, the Army College of Medical Sciences said that it does not have its own teaching hospital and is affiliated with the Army Base Hospital Delhi Cantt and caters to only Army personnel and their families and they also cannot offer CRMI to FMGs.
While the passing percentage of FMGE is increasing every year, there is an acute shortage of seats available for internships.
DMC has suggested allowing internship in DNB institutes as they have excellent facilities and is known for providing quality training to medicos. The council has also requested the ministry to consider taking students twice a year and a ceiling of 7.5% may be removed as one-time relaxation as large numbers of students after clearing FMGE are waiting for internships and seats are quite less medical colleges in Delhi.
The council also requested the ministry to direct AIIMS Delhi, and Army College of Medical Sciences to accommodate the FMG students.
