Doctor alleges medical colleges award degrees without teaching procedures

Based on an RTI reply by the National Medical Commission (NMC), a Punjab based doctor has alleged that more than 80% of medical colleges in India are awarding Master of Surgery (MS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees without teaching surgeries and procedures to students.

As per the TOI report, NMC in its reply has said, "There are no set guidelines about the number of surgeries that are required to be personally done by an MS surgery during the three-year training."

Dr Neeraj Nagpal, the RTI applicant, has said that during his college days an MS or MD degree was awarded based on the competence level of candidates. "Now we are awarding degrees and certificates but not teaching surgeries and procedures," he said.

NMC warns of fake allotment letters

NMC has issued a public notice to warn against the fake allotment letters. The notice reads, "It has come to notice that fake allotment letters (as attached) under the alleged signature of Secretary, National Medical Commission is under circulation. It is brought to the public notice that the Commission does not offer admissions in any medical college or involved at all with college allotment process."

"It is a fabrication intended to tarnish the image of the National Medical Commission which in fact is mandated to supervise the highest ethical standards in the medical profession," the notice added.
