Dr B N Gangadhar Appointed NMC Chairperson, 3 Other Officials Take Charge

Dr B N Gangadhar and other newly appointed official dignitaries will be serving for a period of 4 years; until the appointee attains the age of 70 years, or until further notification, whichever is earliest. 

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced major high-profile appointments in assistance with the Appointment Committee of Cabinet (ACC) in order to boost medical education and healthcare in India. The association has appointed Dr B N Gangadhar as the NMC new chairperson. He served as the interim NMC chairperson following the end of Dr Suresh Chandra Sharma’s tenure in September 2023. Besides, he was the preceding president of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB). Further, Dr Gangadhar is a former director of the top mental health institute, the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS). 

Additionally, Dr Sanjay Behari, a neurosurgeon and director of Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, took charge as the president of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB). Meanwhile, Dr Anil D'Cruz, director (Oncology) of Apollo Hospital, Mumbai, has been appointed as a full-time member of the Post-Graduate Medical Education Board. 

According to government regulations, the appointments shall be ongoing for four years until the appointee reaches the age of 70 years or until further orders, whichever is earliest. However, the appointment of Dr Rajendra Achyut Badwe, professor emeritus at Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, as a part-time member of the undergraduate medical education board is for two years, until he turns 70 or until further notice, whichever comes earlier.
