Extra 1,650 medical college seats from 2021-22 in Tamil Nadu: CM Palaniswami

He informed that the state government got approval to construct 11 additional medical colleges with an expenditure of Rs 4,500 crore to Rs 5,000 crore.

According to a statement by Tamil Nadu chief minister K Palaniswami, the state is likely to offer admission to an additional 1,650 students to its medical colleges from the academic year 2021-22. The number of students is apart from 3,250 seats filled at present. According to his statement, Rs 1,200 crore has been sanctioned to this end in the 2020-21 budget. He laid the foundation stone of a projected government medical college in Ramanathapuram. He informed that the state government got approval to construct 11 additional medical colleges with an expenditure of Rs 4,500 crore to Rs 5,000 crore. For allotting 11 more medical colleges, he thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

 

The Union Health Minister of India Dr. Harsh Vardhan was also available at the function. The union minister informed that Rs 23 crore had already been granted for the construction of the Ramanathapuram Government Medical College as a part of the first installment of the central government's share. He informed that the Centre had given a thought to modify the teacher-student ratio and escalate postgraduate seats in medical education in the country. During the last five years, over 14,500 postgraduate seats have been formed.

 

Dr Harsh Vardhan opined that medical education was moving towards skill-based learning. He stressed upon the sharing of the best practices between several medical colleges and states for inclusive development in the area. Tamil Nadu has been in the limelight for a better medical facility and state-of-the-art technology and has motivated several states to follow its prototype.
