First medical college in Ladakh to start academic session next year

The Ladakh government is planning to begin the first academic session in the first medical college in the region by next year.

Dr Pawan Kotwal, Principal Secretary (Health and Medical Education Department), chaired a meeting and informed the officials to complete pre-fabricated structures of the first medical college in the union territory.

The Ladakh government is all geared up to complete the pre-fabricated structures for the academic block of the new medical college in Leh as the government is aiming to begin the first academic session of the medical college in 2022.

Kotwal has directed the officials that all the required infrastructure as per the National Medical Commission (NMC) norms along with the non-medical furniture must be ready by March or April next year, so that the medical college can begin the academic session next year. 

In the meeting, the roadmap was discussed to complete these tasks, the officials informed Kotwal about the status of detailed project reports (DPR). 

He directed the chief engineer to be ready with an action plan that includes the survey of the site, finalisation of the pre-engineered technology and suitable pre-fabricated, tendering process and award of contract, and the preparation of the DPR.

The chief engineer was also assigned to revise the cost estimates of the  250-bedded hospital proposed to be constructed in the SNM Hospital for the medical college and also prepare the DPR strictly as per the norms and specifications prescribed under the clinical establishment and rules that are implemented to the region.
