FMGs Internship: FAIMA urges PMO internvention

The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has demanded urgent intervention from the Prime Minister's Office into the issues faced by the foreign medical graduates of India. Many FMGs are waiting for internship opportunities after clearing the FMGE exam and there are hardly any options available. Doing an internship after clearing FMGE is a mandatory requirement to practice in India.

Reportedly, around 2000 FMGs have applied for internships in Delhi against a total of 43 seats.

FAIMA's tweet reads, "Around 2000 #FMGs applied for internship in delhi itself against total seats of just 43. We demand urgent intervention of @PMOIndia in this regard as @NMC_IND is not listening to issue of #FMGs despite multiple representations."

FAIMA also wrote to the Chairman of the National Medical Commission and suggested many solutions which include increasing the number of seats for internships in both government and private medical colleges, establishing a dedicated system for allocating these seats to ensure transparency, creating a task force to monitor the progress of foreign medical graduates during their internship to ensure that they are getting necessary training, and encouraging private hospitals to participate in this program by offering incentives such as tax breaks and other benefits.

Dr Rohan Krishnan, Chairman of FAIMA, tweeted, "FMGE Internship candidates can contact me or DM me. We understand your problem and we are with you & will fight It is the responsibility of the @MoHFW_INDIA , GOI to give internship to all the FMGE passouts. Immediately. @NMC_IND should stop harassing doctors."

The President of the Delhi Medical Council, Dr Arun Gupta also said that NMC and union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya should respond proactively to the issues faced by the FMGs.
