Gujarat: 15 Students Booked After 1st Year MBBS Student Dies of Alleged Ragging
The first-year MBBS student was allegedly forced to sing and dance and verbally abused for three and a half hours by 15 students at GMERS Medical College.
Gujarat police have lodged an FIR against 15 students of GMERS Medical College, Dharpur of Patan District owing to the death of an 18-year-old first-year MBBS student of the college. The 15 seniors were allegedly involved in extensive ragging and forced first-year students to sing and dance without their consent. Besides, first-year students were verbally abused for three and half hours, as reported by Hindustan Times.
The incident was reported on Saturday where the first-year students of GMERS Medical College were made to stand outside their hostel rooms for more than three and half hours. While the ragging was going on, Anil Methaniya, an 18-year-old first-year MBBS student lost consciousness and despite rushing to the hospital, he lost his life.
Following this, the college investigated the event and suspended 15 seniors allegedly involved in the ragging. These students of the second-year MBBS programme have been booked for their involvement in ragging. An official complaint was filed by Anil Gokulsingh, Additional Dean of GMERS College, and the anti-ragging team submitted the report after completing the inquiry.
The students have been booked under the various provisions of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita including murder, wrongful confinement, unlawful assembly, and the use of obscene language. The media news reported that the anti-ragging committee was immediately formed and the statement from 26 witnesses was recorded against the wrongdoers. The college administration suspended all 15 students, who have been accused of torturing their juniors, from both hostel and academic activities.
