Gujarat government, through an official notification, directed deans of medical colleges across the state to ensure strict implementation of NMC anti-ragging guidelines at their institutes.

Gujarat Medical News Today

The Gujarat Government has issued a directive to the Deans of medical colleges across the state to ensure anti-ragging measures are laid out at their respective institutes. The authorities have strictly notified that the Deans of the medical institute will be directly responsible for laying down National Medical Commission (NMC) anti-ragging guidelines. The Deans of medical colleges not only have to ensure that the regulations are implemented but also have to monitor whether or not the guidelines are properly followed, as reported by Medical Dialogues.

"The NMC regulations, issued on Nov 18, 2021, should be implemented by all medical colleges run by the state govt, Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS), municipal corporations and private trusts. And the responsibility of strict implementation of these regulations is of the deans of the colleges." The notification by the Gujarat Government stated.

NMC’s Anti-Ragging Guidelines: The Push for Change

The urgent attention to the implementation of NMC's Anti-Ragging guidelines in the state arose after the death of an 18-year-old first-year MBBS student of the GMERS Medical College, Dharpur. Reportedly, 15 seniors allegedly forced the students to sing and dance; and also abused them for three and a half hours. Consequently, the student lost consciousness and lost his life despite rushing to the hospital.
