Gujarat to set up 8 new medical colleges soon
Gujarat is all set to get eight new medical colleges in the next two years.
As per Gujarat's health department sources, the state government is planning to set up eight new medical colleges in the next two years. It will add 1,200 MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) seats in the state, which is nearly 21% of the total number of prevailing seats in Gujarat.
In line with the Centre's vision to have one medical college in every district in India, the Gujarat government is aiming to provide one medical college in every district of the state and to achieve this, the health department will have to set up nearly seven more medical colleges in districts that do not have any medical colleges. The state health department is planning to start new medical colleges in Botad, Veraval, Jam Khambhaliya, Navsari and Rajpipla.
As reported by TOI, an official in the health department said, “The new medical colleges in Morbi, Godhra and Porbandar are expected to start in 2021-22. The inspection process by National Medical Commission (NMC) has been completed. The new medical colleges will add about 150 seats each."
In Gujarat, presently, there are 30 colleges with 5,508 seats. The admission process in these colleges is conducted by Admission Committee for Professional Under Graduate Medical Educational Courses (ACPUGMEC). Moreover, there are another 300 seats in Gujarat under deemed universities, for these seats, the admission is carried out at the college level without the involvement of ACPUGMEC.
The Union health ministry has recently said that since 2014, the Centre has given nod to 157 new medical colleges in India and has invested INR 17,691.08 crore on these projects.
As per the sources, NMC is also working on a plan to increase the total number of medical seats for undergraduate medical programs from 82,500 to 1 lakh seats by next year.
