Haryana MBBS bond amount, service period reduced; Students continue protest

After nearly one month of protest by MBBS students in Haryana against the bond policy, the state government has reduced the bond policy amount from INR 40 lakh to INR 30 lakh and cut down the duration of compulsory government service from seven to five years. These changes were announced by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. However, the students have rejected the changes and said that they will continue their protest.

These decisions were taken on Wednesday in a four-hour-long meeting with the representatives of the protesting students.

"The government has reduced the duration of compulsory government service under the bond policy from seven years to five years. The bond amount has also been reduced from INR 40 lakh to INR 30 lakh. After deducting the fees, the amount will come out to be around INR 25 lakh," said Khattar, as reported by NDTV.

"It was also decided to give a 10 per cent relaxation to girls, excluding the institutional fees. It was also decided that in case of any untoward incident with an MBBS student, his or her family will not be bound to pay the bond amount," he added.

A student leader from Rohtak’s PGIMS, Priya Kaushik said, “We have taken mandate from all medical colleges. The students have refused to accept the government’s proposal. We will continue our agitation," as reported by Indian Express.

On students' demand to provide compulsory service after the course gets completed, the state government assured that it will offer a contractual basis job to the students within a year of completion of their studies.

In the case of a student doing a private job after completing studies and getting a salary less than what a government medical officer gets, he or she will not have to pay the bond amount until his or her salary is commensurate with or more than that of the medical officer, added the government.
