Haryana plans to include 1 year of mandatory Ayurveda studies in MBBS course
I have constituted teams to formulate and prepare the course programme for teaching ayurveda in the MBBS course, said Haryana health minister Anil Vij. While it created concern among the medical experts, the minister said that they are ready to fight for it.
Haryana health minister Anil Vij said the state government is planning to include a year of mandatory ayurveda studies for students pursuing the five-year MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) course.
During the state-level programme of 75 lakhs ‘Surya Namaskar Campaign’ in Ambala Cantonment on Friday, he said, “To promote traditional Indian medicines, we will incorporate a year of ayurveda in five-year MBBS curriculum and if required, we are ready to fight for it.”
“I have constituted teams to formulate and prepare the course programme for teaching ayurveda in the MBBS course,” added the BJP leader, as reported by Hindustan Times.
"Like allopathic medicines, now Ayurvedic medicines will also be reimbursed, I issued orders in this regard yesterday (Thursday)," the minister said, as reported by ABP Live.
While the Central government and many state governments are pushing an integration of the Indian traditional system of medicines with modern medicine, the medical fraternity has not been very encouraging of it and always raised its concerns.
“We can’t deny the contribution of ayurveda or other alternative medicines. But a combined course will create confusion for the students. If this is implemented, we are going to call our executive meeting to discuss further course of action,” said Dr Rajesh Kataria officiating president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
Recently, Georgia asked for Haryana's cooperation in promoting yoga in their country.
