The Indian Medical Association demands enhanced safety measures and a new central law in response to the recent murder of a PG student at R G Kar Medical College, highlighting severe security lapses and violence against medical professionals.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has issued a grave appeal to Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda in response to the shocking murder of a 2nd-year PG student at R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The IMA condemns the brutal crime, which involved rape and murder inside the campus seminar hall, highlighting the severe security lapses and rampant insecurity prevalent at educational institutions.
In their letter, IMA expressed profound sorrow over the incident and criticized the administration for its failure to protect students and staff. The association emphasized the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and legislative reforms to address the increasing violence against medical professionals.
Key demands outlined by IMA include:
Declaration of Hospitals as Safe Zones: Implement legislation to define and enforce safety standards in medical facilities.
Increased Security Measures: Establish police camps and adequate security personnel in major government and private hospitals, and mandate CCTV coverage in vulnerable areas.
Stronger Legislation: Urge reconsideration and implementation of the "Healthcare Service Personnel and Clinical Establishments (Prohibition of Violence and Damage to Property) Bill, 2019," incorporating necessary amendments.
The IMA has also called for:
A thorough and impartial investigation into the Kolkata incident and strict punishment for the perpetrators.
A comprehensive review of conditions contributing to such crimes.
Immediate steps to enhance safety measures for doctors, especially women.
The association has demanded a response within two days and is consulting state branches on further actions. IMA President Dr. R.V. Asokan emphasized that without significant changes, such tragic events may continue, underlining the need for improved protection and legislative support for medical professionals across India.
