IMA requests PM Modi to re-consider merger of NBEMS and NMC

Indian Medical Association (IMA) has written a letter to Prime Minister Modi and requested him to reconsider the proposal to merge the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) with the National Medical Commission (NMC).

The letter says that NBEMS as an autonomous body has performed to the needs of society in the last few years and it would be detrimental if NBEMS is merged with NMC as the pace of reforms undertaken by NBEMS is likely to be slowed down.

"We on behalf of IMA humbly request you to re-consider the proposal of merger of NBEMS and NMC and allow NBEMS to continue in its present form as an autonomous body of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India," reads the letter.

IMA said that the improvement in the quality of medical education over the last 8 years can be attributed to NBEMS. It has undertaken several reforms for improving the quality of medical education in India including increasing PG seats, the launch of diploma courses, starting new courses, webinar classes, good clinical practice guidelines, and fellowship programmes for international students.

"Qualifications awarded by NBEMS, Diplomat of National Board (DNB) and Doctorate of National Board (DrNB) are recognized worldwide and have better job prospects as compared to qualifications awarded by erstwhile MCI and NMC. It is a matter of pride for all of us that more than 1 lakh doctors have been awarded with DNB and DrNB qualifications and are playing an instrumental role in health care delivery system in India and abroad," added the letter.
