The IMA asserts that the implementation of NExT could jeopardize the affordability and accessibility of medical education, particularly for institutions serving underprivileged communities.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has voiced serious reservations regarding the proposed National Exit Test (NExT) in a letter addressed to Dr. B.N. Gangadhar, Chairman of the National Medical Commission (NMC).
Dr. R V Asokan, National President of the IMA, highlighted several critical concerns regarding the introduction of NExT, outlining the following key points:
Impact on Medical Education Accessibility: The IMA asserts that the implementation of NExT could jeopardize the affordability and accessibility of medical education, particularly for institutions serving underprivileged communities. They argue that denying degrees to medical graduates due to the NExT could hinder the vision of affordable healthcare education envisioned by the government.
Uniform Standards and Feasibility: The IMA points out the absence of uniform standards across all medical institutions, questioning the feasibility of conducting a single test for the entire country.
Dual Purpose of Licensing and PG Entrance Exam: Dr. Asokan argues that conducting NExT as both a licensure exam and a postgraduate entrance exam is illogical, as the focus of each assessment should be distinct.
Concerns Over Exam Format and Coaching Centers: The IMA expresses concerns that the proposed MCQ-based test format may diminish student engagement in classes and clinics, leading to the proliferation of coaching centers catering only to affluent students. Additionally, the compressed timeline for syllabus coverage raises doubts about academic and clinical competency.
Preservation of University Rights: The IMA emphasizes the importance of universities retaining the authority to award medical degrees.
In conclusion, Dr. Asokan urges for extensive discussions with the IMA and other stakeholders before proceeding with NExT implementation. He calls for considerations regarding passing criteria, stakeholder consultations, assessment methodology, and the notification process for incoming medical students.
The letter underscores the necessity for a thorough evaluation of NExT's potential benefits, limitations, and impact on medical education before its implementation. Dr. Asokan stresses the need for adequate technical infrastructure, faculty training, and support across all medical institutions to ensure equitable adoption of NExT.
