Interim Budget 2024: Medical Research Sector gets INR 3001.73 crores

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today presented the Union Budget 2024 in Parliament. The total allocation for Medical Research Sector is INR 3001.73 crores as compared to INR 2980.00 crores allocated in the last budget. 

The setting up of nation wide network of laboratories for managing epidemics and national calamities budget saw no changes as it stands at INR 60 crore as was in the last budget, Development of Infrastructure for Promotion of Health Research got an allocation of INR 80 core which is again same as allocated last year. The Development of tools/support to prevent outbreaks of epidemics is allocated INR 8.00 crore as against INR 10 crore in the last budget.

Prime Minister's Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM)-Bio Security Preparedness and strengthening Pandemic Research and Multi Sector and National Institutions and Platform for One Health gets an allocation of INR 212.21 crore against INR 324.36 crore in the last budget 2024.

Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi, this year gets an allocation of INR 2432.13 crores as compared to last year's INR 2359.58 crores.

Indian Council of Medical Research is the apex body in the country to promote, co-ordinate and formulate biomedical and health research. Central Government gives grants to the Council for research in health, nutrition, non-communicable diseases and basic research. The Council is also engaged in research on tribal health, traditional medicine and publication and dissemination of information. While talking about the youths' aspiration to become doctors, the Finance Minister announced the government's plan to set up more government medical colleges.
