Karnataka adds 650 MBBS seats, 216 PG medical seats

Karnataka has added more medical seats for this academic year. It has added as many as 650 MBBS and 216 postgraduate medical seats from the current academic year. It will take the total number count of UG and PG medical seats to 10,795 and 5,360 respectively.

As per the TOI report, the medical seat pool of Karnataka will further increase if seats of Rajarajeshwari medical college based in Bengaluru are officially added to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) quota.

Additional seats are spread over new and existing colleges in Haveri, Yadgir, Chikmagaluru, Ballari and Tumakuru. As of last year, Karnataka had the second highest number of MBBS seats in the country, just behind Tamil Nadu which had 10,625 seats then.

National Medical Commission recently approved three new government medical colleges in Chikmagaluru, Haveri and Yadgir. These colleges will offer 150 MBBS seats each. Last year, the permission was declined after the inspection report. However, now the commission has approved the medical colleges.

In Karnataka, 11 deemed universities offer 2000 MBBS seats. There are 23 government medical colleges offering 3,500 undergraduate medical seats and admissions to 525 MBBS seats under the All India Quota are given by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).

In the state, private medical colleges have demanded a 15% increase in fee and said that they will not sign the consensual agreement unless the government agrees to increase in fee. However, the government is yet to take any decision on this matter.
