KMC, Manipal to include transgender community in campus

Kasturba Medical College, Manipal has announced to include the transgender community in its campus and hospital.

Kasturba Medical College, Manipal dean Dr Sharath Kumar Rao has announced at the Transcare Campus Connect event that the medical college is working towards including the transgender community in its campus and hospital.

To remember the transgender lives lost, the college will also commemorate the International Day of Transgender Remembrance as confirmed by the dean of the college.

Kasturba Medical College, Manipal has taken this decision in line with the recent verdicts from Kerala High court and Madras High Court and NMC which stated that the teaching material in medical colleges must be sensitive towards the transgender and should not carry biased information regarding LGBTQIA (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) + community.

The event was organised in alliance with the TransCare MedEd team and Dr Rao also released a booklet named 'Colours Among Us' during the Transcare Campus Connect event.

He said during the event that KMC Manipal and MAHE must take leadership to include the transgender community. He also highlighted the efforts taken by the institute to include disability and he talked about taking a similar initiative towards including the transgender community. 

"Unfortunately, parents often become the enemy of the child. Gender is often forced on a child based on their sex assigned at birth. Parents need to talk about gender with their children. Campuses need to enable conversations and inclusion," said Dr Aqsa Shaikh, a leading trans advocate as quoted by NDTV.
