Maharashtra Cabinet Approves 9 New Government Medical Colleges
At present, there are 23 government medical colleges in the state with an admission capacity of 3,750 students.
The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved INR 4365.72 crores to start new government medical colleges.
Till now, out of the 36 districts in Maharashtra, only 23 of them have government medical colleges. With the establishment of the nine GMCs in Gadchiroli, Bhandara, Buldhana, Washim, Wardha, Amravati, Jalna, Thane and Palghar, the number of GMCs would increase to 32.
"The medical colleges will help in producing efficient and specialized doctors. This will not only help in providing timely treatments but also address the issue of shortages of doctors in the state,” said Girish Mahajan, the state medical education minister, as reported by Indian Express.
The state cabinet on Wednesday approved 31 proposals for new schemes and restructured the existing ones in many departments.
Some top government engineering and pharmacy colleges in the state have been given the Centre of Excellence tag for assisting the industry/manufacturing with innovation and creating more jobs.
As per the report of Mid Day, Mumbai’s Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute is one such institute with INR 5L health cover. CM Eknath Shinde said the health insurance coverage for all citizens of Maharashtra has been raised to INR 5 lakh per year.
The Cabinet approved a proposal to allow permanently unaided private veterinary science and animal husbandry colleges. This is expected to open another floodgate for the politician-turned-education barons, who already run professional universities/colleges that impart education in medical, pharmacy, engineering, management, hospitality etc.
