Maharashtra's resident doctors demand urgent Central Health Care Protection Act

Maharashtra State Association of Resident Doctors wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded Central Health Care Protection for the safety of doctors across the nation.

While reacting to the unfortunate death of Dr Vandana, the association said that doctors often live a life where their priority is to treat patients while compromising their own personal life and health on a daily basis. These acts of violence don't help the doctors' confidence. Attacks of these kinds have even created a trend where senior doctors have developed hesitation in attending emergency cases due to fear of unruly patients and their relatives.

The association also said that it will create fear in young doctors.

"Current system of punishing the perpetrator is just not enough, once a doctor faces any form of violence professionally, it creates an atmosphere of helplessness and vulnerability in their minds, such incidents prevent the doctors from performing at their best capacity which in turn affects the patient care, this is why policy changes that are prevention centric is equally important as much as punishment of the miscreant of such a crime. Such policy changes are the need of the hour," reads the letter.

On May 10, 2023, Dr Vandana - a young doctor in Kerala was killed by an undertrial patient while giving treatment. The accused stabbed her six times with the scissors from the dressing room.
