Maharashtra to get three new government medical colleges
Maharashtra is all set to start three new medical colleges in Sindhudurg, Alibaug and Satara (Pune region) from this academic year.
Dileep Mhaisekar, Director of Medical Education and Research (DMER), told The Indian Express, “Efforts are underway to start three new medical colleges at Satara, Alibaug and Sindhudurg. Inspections have been conducted by the panel from the
National Medical Commission (NMC) and reports have been sent to the centre.”
The state already has 19 medical colleges with nearly 3,300 seats for MBBS. Before giving the go-ahead to start the course, the NMC looks at a few criteria such as manpower and infrastructure.
“Three have been proposed and a minimum of 100 seats will be introduced in each college,” Dr Mhaisekar told The Indian Express.
NMC inspection team visited Satara on August 11 and 12 and expressed satisfaction over manpower and infrastructure. The project is supported by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. He has earlier assured adequate funding for the construction of the medical college. The 62 acres of land was acquired for the proposed college and the construction is expected to begin soon.
