Due to the increase in the MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu, the cut-off for MBBS admission in the state is expected to fall by a minimum of 10 marks.

This year National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) entrance exam has been surrounded by many controversies. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is trying his best to abolish the entrance exam from the state due to the many suicide cases allegedly due to the pressure of qualifying for the NEET examination.

The state has also witnessed an increase in the number of MBBS seats both in the private and government colleges and hence it is expected that the cut-off marks for admission to the undergraduate medical degree MBBS will go down by a minimum of 10 marks in various categories in 2021. Since the year 2017, this is the first time the cut-off has dropped.

As per the data of the National Testing Agency (NTA), this year around 235 students from Tamil Nadu scored more than 650 marks and last year only 205 students from the state could cross this mark. The data shows marginal improvement by TN candidates in the NEET exam. Moreover, this year, around 5,148 students scored above 500 marks and last year 5,240 students crossed this mark and the total number of students who scored more than 450 this year are 8,319 and last year the number was almost the same with 8,316 students crossing 450 marks.

The state recently got Union Health Ministry's approval to add 150 medical seats at four new government medical colleges in Krishnagiri, Dindigul, Nagapattinam and Ariyalur. Now, the total number of MBBS seats in 11 new government medical colleges in the state are 1450 and another government medical college in Coimbatore will admit 200 MBBS students this year which is 50 more than the previous year.
