Medical education books to be translated into Gujarati language
After MBBS in Hindi, Marathi and Tamil, now the medical education books will also be translated into the Gujarati language.
While a lot is happening in the direction of offering medical education in Hindi and regional languages. The latest is, that Gujarat is translating the medical education books of medical, dental, nursing and physiotherapy into the regional language Gujarati.
The commissioner of medical education and health issued a notification which stated that a 17 membered committee has been set up to translate all medical education textbooks of medical, dental, physiotherapy and nursing courses into Gujarati.
"The committee will submit a roadmap to the department within a fortnight. The decision has been taken in light of the National Education Policy (NEP)," said the notification, as reported by TOI.
The Background
All this started with the launch of MBBS textbooks in Hindi in Madhya Pradesh last month. Now, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra are also working to provide medical education in their respective regional languages. Uttar Pradesh is working to provide medical and technical education in Hindi from the next academic session.
On November 10, National Medical Commission (NMC) convened a meeting of all state heads over video conferencing under the agenda 'Bilingual Education'. In the meeting, it was decided to form a committee at the state level to delegate responsibilities, added the notification.
However, the medical fraternity is not convinced by the government's decision and they see it as a retrograde step for medical education in India. The government says they are only giving an option to the students so that they can overcome the language barriers and learn medical education in their languages.
