MGIMS students filed a complaint with the state medical education department for a mid-course fee hike from INR 35,000 to INR 75,800 in the middle for four-and-a-half-year course.

MGIMS Students on Strike

Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS) fee structure has been increased and a complaint in this regard has been filed by the medical students with the state medical education department.

Sudden Fee Increase Made Students Furious

As per the MGIMS fee structure, students had to pay INR 35,000 as additional charges for the academic year 2022-23, while, for academic year 2023-24, students are required to pay Rs 75,800 as additional charges. This sudden mid-course hike in the college fees and hostel charges has made students furious. Consequently, students have decided to file a complaint against the decision.

MGIMS Forcing Students to Mandatorily Take Hostel Facility

As per the students, the institute imposes additional charges in the middle of the four-and-a-half-year programme including an increase in the hostel fees without offering additional facilities. The students further alleged that the MGIMS is forcing students to mandatorily opt for hostel facilities, even for the interns. Note that, the action of forcing students to opt for the hostel is against the directives issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

MGIMS is coordinated by the Central Government, the state, and the Kasturba Health Society. These authorities share the expenditure in the proportion of 50%, 25% and 25% respectively. Since the college fee is nominal in comparison to the other medical institutes, the students are required to pay fees similar to the other government college fees, as reported by Medical Dialogues.

Additional Charges for MBBS Programme

Additionally, some students have complaints that the college has imposed additional charges in the middle of their MBBS course and increased the hostel fee from INR 12,500 to INR 30,000 per semester. Further, students have to additionally pay INR 4,500 for Wi-Fi facilities even though the college has been offering Wi-Fi facilities since day one, as reported by TOI.

"Recently, the stipends for medical interns were hiked in all colleges from Rs 11,000 to Rs 18,000, but the college has simultaneously increased additional fees, so effectively students are still getting the old stipend amount," an MGIMS student added.

Meanwhile, remarking on the matter, the secretary of the State Medical Education Department Dinesh Waghmare informed that they would look into the complaint.
