The alumni of Madras Medical College (MMC) want the college to be declared a centre of excellence. The association has proposed to improve industry-academia partnership for research and development and conduct of clinical research and trials

M Arulpitchai Narayanan, the association secretary said, "The college has the potential to be declared a medical college on a par with the Christian Medical College in Vellore and the AIIMS Delhi," as reported by The Hindu.

He added that the association was instrumental in getting the prison land for the college and twin tower blocks. Many alumni members of the association have won national and international appreciation.

The association has proposed to set up a social support group of non-medical persons and is planning a better approach for the new campus of MMC.

During the alumni meeting, the veterans who had helped establish and upgrade various speciality departments were honoured including senior nonagenarian doctors - pharmacologist GM Yahya, S Ramaswamy, second ENT PG graduate VL Rangan, rural practitioner TAK Rathnam and professor of medicine G Ananthasubramanian.

The Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital which is attached to the MMC receives daily over 12,000 out-patients and around 5,500 in-patients and has 2,000 PGs working on the campus in its 55 departments.

The courses offered by the Madras Medical College are affiliated with the “The Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University”. This college has nine affiliated institutions with hospitals, each one of them recognized for excellence in health care services, said MMC statement.
