NEET aspirant dies in Tamil Nadu; Protest begins to ban the exam

The state already views the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) critically and demands its ban. Now, again a NEET aspirant reportedly died by suicide in Salem district on Monday and the demand to ban the exam is once again in the spotlight.

The 19-year-old aspirant was reportedly preparing for NEET for the third time. He was found hanging dead in a hostel room at the training centre of a private school in Ammapalayam near Athur in Salem, said the police.

As per Free Press Journal report, the student was under pressure as he was to attempt the exam for the third time on May 7, 2023, and was unsure about clearing it.

Police rushed to the spot after receiving information from the hostel warden and recovered the student's body and sent it for postmortem to the Salem Government Hospital.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and its leader Thol Thirumavalavan called for a protest on Tuesday regarding the cancellation of NEET exam in Tamil Nadu.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party vowed to ban NEET in the state, alleging the exams for enrollment to medical colleges across India violate the principle of federalism, which is part of the basic structure of the Constitution.

The state Assembly passed the bill to ban NEET twice after the Governor refused to give his consent for the legislation when it was passed for the first time. The bill was passed for a second time by the Assembly and the Governor forwarded it to the President for consent.
