NEET UG 2024: Congress Raises Concerns Over OBC Reservation in Medical Colleges
out of a total of 23,81,833 NEET UG 2024 Exam applicants, over 10 lakh belong to the OBC Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) category.
In the ongoing debate over reservation in medical colleges, Congress has once again spotlighted the issue of Other Backward Classes (OBC) representation. This time, Congress leaders are pointing fingers at the disparity in NEET UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate) application numbers, demanding increased quotas for OBC candidates.
Anil Eravathri, a senior leader of the Congress Party from Telangana, took to Twitter to express his concerns. He stated, "NEET is a classic example of injustice to OBCs. OBCs have to compete with 35 candidates to secure 1 seat in MBBS, whereas for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), it’s just 17 competitors." Eravathri attributed this perceived injustice to the BJP/RSS, alleging a longstanding bias against backward communities regarding reservations.
Furthermore, Eravathri emphasized the urgency of a national-level Caste Census to uphold principles of equality and social justice. He advocated for Congress's commitment to implementing reservations according to population proportions, aiming to foster equality and fraternity.
Prime Minister Modi Counters Allegations, Accuses Opposition of Appeasement
In a political rally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance in Uttar Pradesh, labeling it as based on a "policy of appeasement." Modi accused opposition leaders of attempting to strip away OBC rights through covert means.
Addressing the issue of inheritance tax, Modi alleged that the Congress, particularly Rahul Gandhi, aimed to assess individuals' properties through an "X-ray machine" if they came to power. He condemned such measures as attempts to seize the belongings of the poor, including women's Mangalsutras, promising to safeguard their interests.
NEET UG 2024 Application Statistics
The NEET UG 2024 application statistics reveal significant disparities in candidate demographics and reservation quotas. According to All India OBC Students Association, out of a total of 23,81,833 applicants, over 10 lakh belong to the OBC Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) category. However, the ratio of applicants to available seats remains disproportionate across categories, particularly for OBC candidates, with a ratio of 35 applicants for every seat. NTA will conduct the NEET UG 2024 exam on May 5, 2024, for admission to undergraduate medical and paramedical courses offered in India.
