The Supreme Court has rejected a petition that challenging the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) signature campaign in Tamil Nadu, seeking to abolish the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical college admissions across the country. The petitioner urged the state to stop these activities in schools. As per PTI reports, a panel including Justices Surya Kant and K V Viswanathan highlighted the necessity of conducting nationwide competitive exams.
According to Justice Kant, such a campaign against a national-level test with central planning will not affect students, therefore it is not an issue. The bench, however, declined to entertain the petition. In October last year, the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu had launched a campaign to obtain 50 lakh signatures in 50 days seeking to abolish the NEET.
Anti NEET Campaign
The campaign was launched by the DMK, led by Tamil Nadu youth welfare and sports development minister Udayanidhi Stalin. As per reports, the signatures gathered for the campaign would be delivered to president Draupadi Murmu. Tamil Nadu sports minister Udhayanidhi Stalin began the DMK's signature campaign 'NEET Vilaku, Naam Ilakku' to collect 50 lakh signatures against NEET in 50 days. Udhayanidhi launched the campaign by signing his name against NEET on a digital screen, while CM Stalin registered the first sign via postal ballot.
Students Get Disturbed
"By this act, Students get disturbed and later they may have to face the NEET exams, the students may get depressed and end up in mental agony and spoil their career," the petition said. In response to the petitioner's argument about the distress faced by children, Justice Kant remarked, "Fortunately, now we have a very informed generation.
"They are far ahead of our generation⦠They understand everything, what is the motive, what is the agenda, how it happens," added Justice Surya Kant.
