NMC advises medical colleges to take care of mental health of PG medical students
NMC has sent a letter to medical colleges and advised them to take care of the mental health health and well-being of the PG medical students.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has written a letter to the Director/Principal/Dean of all medical colleges/institutions that it received many grievances from PG medical students (Resident Doctors) about being under stress and depression due to long working hours, non-sanctioning of leave during an emergency, and no weekly off.
The Commission has advised the medical colleges to take care of the mental health of the PG medicos by ensuring adequate rest, weekly off, arranging Yoga sessions on a regular basis, counselling for resident doctors under stress, sanctioning leave when required and respecting their dignity by providing a positive conducive working environment.
"A committee may be constituted to look into the complaints/grievances including anonymous complaints/grievances which may be submitted by PG students either through mail or received in a drop box specially placed for this purpose," reads NMC's official notification.
Healthy and stress-free doctors are good for patients too, says NMC
The official notification also added that a healthy and stress-free doctor is critical not only for his/her own well-being but also for the well-being of the patients he/she treats.
"All medical colleges/institutes are therefore requested to take necessary steps for taking care of the mental health and well-being of the PG medical students studying/working with them. An action taken report on the issue as well as the practice being followed in the College/Institute may be provided to National Medical Commission on regular basis especially monitoring the cases of suicide, gender bias and incidences of dishonour to woman decency etc.," added the notification.
