NMC gives a go-ahead to the newly established Virudhunagar Government Medical College to start operating with 150 MBBS seats.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted permission to the newly established Virudhunagar Government Medical College (GMC) to admit MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery) students. The college is all set to start operating soon with an intake capacity of 150 MBBS seats.

As per the reports, the NMC team had inspected the college which is still under construction and permitted to start admitting students for the MBBS course. Virudhunagar Government Medical College is among the eleven new medical colleges in Tamil Nadu that have been approved to operate from this academic year.

The Health Minister of Tamil Nadu has recently said that the Centre has approved an additional 850 MBBS seats in the seven new medical colleges in the state. The new medical colleges at Kallakurichi and Udhagamandalam also got the NMC's nod for an intake of 150 students each. Moreover, NMC has approved an intake of 100 students each at Ramanathapuram, Tiruvallur, Namakkal, and Tiruppur government medical colleges.

Tamil Nadu has a total number of 52 medical colleges, and 26 of them are government-run colleges. As per the data represented by Minister of State (MoS) Bharati Pravin Pawar, there are a total number of 3650 MBBS seats in the state belonging to the government medical colleges. 

The new medical college at Virudhunagar will have an auditorium, six-storey faculty block, two-storey administrative block, gymnasium, cafeteria, post office and bank. Also, residential quarters for the faculty and separate hostels, as reported by The Hindu
