NMC inspection report of private medical college in Maharashtra shocking: SC

Supreme Court bench said that it is shocking and it's like a Munna Bhai movie that all patients of Annasaheb Chudaman Patil Memorial Medical College were found hale and hearty in NMC inspection.

Recently, NMC (National Medical Commission) had put the Dhule-based Annasaheb Chudaman Patil Memorial Medical College on the no-admission list after a surprise inspection of the college. The Supreme Court of India has expressed shock and disappointment over the inspection report of the college and compared it to the 'Munna Bhai MBBS' movie moment. 

NMC had cancelled the admission of additional students in the medical college on grounds that no serious in-patient was found in the paediatric ward. Also, there were no operation theatres and X-Ray machines in the college besides other deficiencies.

A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant has said, "It is shocking. It's like a Munna Bhai Movie. All the patients in the ward were found to be hale and hearty. In the paediatric ward, there was no serious patient. We can't tell what else we found in the inspection report. We were surprised," as reported by the Republic World.

The college's counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that the inspection was carried out on a public holiday and that too without any previous notice.

SC responded to that and said, “Illness does not stop on ‘Makar Sankranti'. Your client (college) did not say that there were no patients.”

Earlier, the Bombay High Court had ordered the fresh inspection of the college by NMC and allowed the admission of 100 MBBS students.

About the surprise visit Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and advocate Gaurav Sharma said that NMC can take such an inspection under the law and what Bombay HC did was that it allowed 100 MBBS students to take admissions which was the initial capacity of the college.

The solicitor said that the students need not worry as they would be accommodated in other medical colleges after consultation with the government.

“Only one thing I need to point out, 100 were given the permission and 50 was new and what this order does is that they continue with 100 but don't admit new so that new batch does not come in this kind of institution. Now, if we cancel their recognition, those students will not suffer, as in consultation with the government we will distribute them in other colleges. But they cannot now start adding new students in this kind of institution,” said Mehta.
