The steps to optimise the medical education counselling process at the national level will be discussed in the next NMC meeting on November 30, 2023.

National Medical Commission (NMC) held a meeting on November 8, 2023, under the leadership of Dr BN Gangadhar, Chairman, NMC. The main focus of the meeting was to improve the medical education counselling process at the national level.

Medical Counselling Committee which conducts the counselling for All India Quota seats gave a comprehensive presentation on this in the presence of DGHS, MOHFW - Dr Atul Goel, Director General. 

Dr Gangadhar expressed his appreciation to the MCC members for their contributions and commitment to improving medical education in India.

"Our mission at NMC is to raise the standards of medical education in India and a transparent and smooth counselling process adds to that goal," he said.

An official said the NMC exercise on the counselling process “will help (it) understand the reasons behind seats remaining vacant and what can be done to address it”, as reported by Indian Express.

The meeting was also attended by Dr Aruna V Vanikar, President of the Undergraduate Medical Education Board, Dr Vijay Oza, President of Post Graduate Medical Education Board, Dr Yogender Mallik, Member of Ethics and Medical Registration Board, Dr B Srinivas, DDG (ME), Sh Pankaj Aggarwal, Director (IT and Coordination) and Aujender Singh, Deputy Secretary (PGMEB).

As per the government's data, before 2014, there were only 31,185 PG seats in the country. For the current session, it has increased to nearly 68,000.
