NMC has recommended CharkaShapath and yoga training as part of the implementation of a new Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) for the UG course curriculum 2021.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has recommended modified Maharshi CharkaShapath and yoga training as part of the implementation of a new Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) for the undergraduate course curriculum.

NMC has directed all state governments/UTs, universities and medical colleges/institutes to take immediate necessary steps to implement the CBME for the undergraduate course curriculum 2021.

As per the notification, the CBME 2021 will start on February 14 2022 in all medical colleges across the country.

NMC notification says, "The basic framework and inclusions of CBME will not be disturbed as they are vital components of outcome-based education. It is mainly the redistribution of course in view of the Covid-19 pandemic within the time frame that needs consideration for the 2021-22 batch who were admitted in February 2022."

New recommendations under CBME

Modified Maharshi CharkaShapath is recommended when a candidate is introduced to medical education, yoga training is recommended to be started during the foundation course (1 hour preferably in the morning in orientation week). Yoga practices will be for a maximum of one hour every day during the period of 10 days beginning on June 12 every year to be culminated on International Yoga day on June 21, to be celebrated in all medical schools across India.

On March 29, Minister of State for Health Bharati Pawar had told the Rajya Sabha, “As informed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), there is no proposal of replacement of Hippocratic Oath with Charak Shapath,” as reported by the Tribune India.
