National Medical Commission (NMC) has withdrawn its recent notification announcing the discontinuation of all medical courses run by the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS) Mumbai. The decision, in compliance with the High Court of Judicature at Bombay's Order, has been respected by students who wish to pursue CPS postgraduate courses.

The original notification dated August 16, 2024, notified the discontinuation of all courses offered under the umbrella of the College of Physicians & Surgeons (CPS), Mumbai. The reason behind the decision was significant concerns within the medical community. CPS is a medical institution by definition of the erstwhile IMC Act 1956 or as per section 2(i) of the NMC Act 2019 and was considered under the examination body. Due to being the only institution of its kind, the CPS's unique status has made it an important institution in the healthcare sector of the region.

Speaking about the decision, Dr. Ajay D. Sambre, President of the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Mumbai, said, “CPS welcomes this decision by NMC and with this decision, all negative remarks and speculations will stop.” He further added, “With this order, not only CPS but the entire alumni of CPS and the future students have received justice.”

The decision to discontinue CPS courses has raised serious questions concerning the regional dynamics and its consequences. Despite of NMC's decision to withdraw the decision, the concerns remain unattained.
