No common counselling this year for UG medical admissions: TN Health Minister

Addressing newspersons after the 187th graduate reception day of Madras Medical College on Monday, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian said that there will be no common counselling for admissions to undergraduate medical and dental courses in all medical institutions this year.

The state will oppose common counselling if the Centre comes up with it next year, he added, as reported by Indian Express.

National Medical Commission (NMC) has proposed common counselling for admissions to undergraduate medical courses under Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023, or GMER-23. This was also orally communicated to the state by the Union Health Ministry last week.

"Last month when the common counselling was announced, Health Secretary P Senthilkumar wrote a letter to the Union health ministry, saying common counselling will deprive the rights of the state government. The health secretary and I will meet Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and register our opposition for common counselling. After this, if needed, we will consider legal options,” he said.

The health minister said common counselling will definitely affect state reservations like the 7.5% quota for government school students. “Tamil Nadu has the best medical colleges in the country. If common counselling is introduced, medical seats would go to students from other states. This will reflect in medical services,” he added.

"Without prejudice to anything stated in the present Regulations or other NMC Regulations, there shall be common counselling for admission to graduate courses in medicine for all Medical Institutions in India based on the merit list of the NEET-UG," said the Commission in a gazette notification on June 2, 2023.
