PM Modi reiterates govt intent of one medical college in each district
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again repeated the Central government's plan to have a minimum of one medical college in every district.
During his visit to Uttar Pradesh for unveiling mega-development projects today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again reiterated the Central government's plan of having at least one medical college in every district of the country.
A tweet by PIB India on December 7, reads, "In the last 7 years, work is going on to build 16 new #AIIMS in the country. Today, our target is to have at least 1 medical college in every district: PM @narendramodi"
He said, "Till the beginning of this century, there was only one AIIMS in the country. Former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee had approved 6 more AIIMS. The Prime Minister said work is going on across the country to build 16 new AIIMS in the last 7 years."
The former Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan had said in the Rajya Sabha that India has a total of 157 medical colleges at different stages of implementation. All these medical colleges are sponsored under the Central scheme ‘Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals'.
These medical colleges will get established in a phased manner. PM Modi today unveiled an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Gorakhpur and on October 25, this year, he had inaugurated nine new medical colleges in districts of Pratapgarh, Ghazipur, Fatehpur, Etah, Deoria, Hardoi, Jaunpur, Mirzapur, and Siddhartha Nagar.
