Private medical college charges INR 500 for not attending morning lecture

While National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines say that 75% attendance is mandatory for students, a private medical college Heritage Institute of Medical Sciences issued a notice to charge INR 500 for not attending the morning lecture.

The college said that they have observed that several students are not attending the morning classes at 8:30 am which is a trend in the batch of 2019 and 2020, hence the college decided to collect the fine.

The college's office order reads, "It has been observed that many students are missing morning classes which start at 8:30 am. Institute administration has taken a serious view of this. Today morning in a class 2019 batch very few students were present. This trend is seen mostly in the 2019 & 2020 batches. They are in habit of missing morning classes. To overcome this problem, it has been decided that a fine of INR 500 will be imposed on students of all batches, who miss the morning class. In addition, an email will be sent to their parents informing them that their wards are not attending classes, although they are present in the hostel."

"All HOD's are requested to inform faculty members to send attendance of morning classes to the office of Principal every day by 11 am after taking the morning class. List of absentees will be sent to Finance Dept for necessary action & to Student section for informing their parents by mail," added the order.

Dr Meet Ghonia, Respiratory Medicine at NITRD Ministry of Health, tweeted, "Now, Private Medical Colleges started charging 500/- as fine for not attending morning lecture. As per NMC norms, 75% attendance is necessary & it's on Students to make themselves eligible for exams. New form of making money? Did @NMC_IND give permission for this!?"
