PSHRC seeks report on Faridkot Medical College infrastructure

As per reports, Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has ordered the director of health services and family welfare to submit a report on the complaint about the pitiable condition of infrastructure and services in various departments of Guru Gobind Singh Medical College Hospital (GGSMC), Faridkot.

The complaint was filed by a Faridkot resident and PSHRC has asked the health authorities to file a report by the next hearing on July 25, 2022.

As per the complaint, Guru Gobind Singh Medical College lacks basic infrastructure, and the machines in various departments have been rendered obsolete, mostly out of order. The Cobalt 60 machine in the cancer department, MRI machine in the radiology department, C-ARM machine in the operation theatre, PET-CT scan machine in the nuclear medicine department and Holter machine in the medicine department are not properly working, as per the complaint, as reported by TOI.

“The number of doctors and staff such as staff nurses and helpers is inadequate. The essential medicines are not available in an emergency. Ordinarily, during an emergency, an X-ray machine and ultrasound are not available and patients have to wait for several hours for an X-ray. There is a shortage of stretchers and wheelchairs in the emergency department, which requires to be equipped properly with such basic infrastructure. Besides, there is a requirement of super-specialty surgeon for cancer and oncology surgeon,” said the complainant.
