In line with the Central government's vision to have at least one medical college in each district, the Punjab government also plans to open one medical college in each district.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated his aim to have at least one medical college in each district of India on many platforms, now the AAP party led Punjab government is also planning to open one medical college in each district of the state to increase the accessibility to quality medical education and healthcare.

Punjab medical and dental colleges details

Currently, the state has a total of 12 medical colleges - four government, six private and one under PPP mode and one Centre-run. All these colleges offer 1,750 MBBS seats, of which 800 in government, and 950 in private colleges. The total MBBS seats in the state are only 2% of the total 91,000 MBBS seats at all India levels. 

Apart from these colleges, three more colleges are under construction under the centrally-sponsored program. The three government medical colleges in Punjab will be opened soon at a cost of INR 1,000 crore. The Centre has released INR 50 crore each for Gurdaspur and Kapurthala colleges, out of the allocated amount of INR 390 crore. Medical college at Kapurthala would cost INR 325 crore.

The state has a total of 14 dental colleges including two government and 12 private dental colleges, 15 Ayush colleges, and 257 nursing colleges. Two government medical universities are BFUHS Faridkot, and GRAU Hoshiarpur and two private universities include Adesh Bathinda and SGRD Amritsar.
