Punjab to have 3 new government medical colleges by 2022
While the government medical college in Mohali will start operating in 2021, the medical colleges in Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala which have been sanctioned by the government will start in 2022.
Punjab Medical Education Minister Om Prakash Soni has announced that the three government medical colleges in the state will be opened soon at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore.
While the government medical college in Mohali will start operating in 2021, the medical colleges in Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala which have been sanctioned by the government will start in 2022.
The medical education minister further stated that soon, a burn unit and a trauma centre will be started at Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. He said that a Cancer centre with a 150-bed capacity is being set up in Amritsar at a cost of Rs 120 crore. It will be ready by the year-end, he said. Also, a separate department of virology will also be started at the government medical college, Amritsar.
A new sub-station will also be set up at Amritsar medical college to prevent power shortage, Soni said, adding that a super-specialty block and five new operation theratres were being set up in Faridkot. Two new hostels will also be set up in Jalalabad and one in Goindwal Sahib, along with a pharmacy building at a cost of about Rs 5 crore. Diploma courses are also being started at Baba Farid University hospital in Badal and Jalalabad, the minister said.
He also announced that the state government has also initiated proceedings for setting up a state of the art advanced virology centre at a cost of Rs 550 crore in Mohali. The Centre will offer virology education, research and testing facilities under an ICMR funded project, he said.
