Rajasthan to Offer MBBS Courses in Hindi, Following Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh's Lead
The move will begin in two medical colleges—Sampurnanand Medical College in Jodhpur and Medical College of Barmer, both affiliated with Marwar Medical University.
The Rajasthan government has announced that medical education in state colleges will be offered in Hindi, alongside English, starting from the 2024-2025 academic session. This decision was revealed on Hindi Diwas (September 14), joining similar initiatives by Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, which have already introduced Hindi as a medium of instruction for MBBS courses.
The move will begin in two medical colleges—Sampurnanand Medical College in Jodhpur and Medical College of Barmer, both affiliated with Marwar Medical University. Students will have the option to pursue their MBBS degrees in either Hindi or English, as confirmed by Gayatri Rathore, Principal Secretary of the Medical Education Department. This initiative is part of the state's budget plans to incorporate Hindi into medical education.
To facilitate this transition, the Rajasthan health department has been tasked with providing textbooks and study materials in Hindi, initially targeting first-year MBBS students. This effort aims to make medical education more accessible to a broader range of students across the country.
Chhattisgarh has also recently announced that MBBS courses will be taught in Hindi from the current academic session. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai emphasized that this shift aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to promote regional languages in medical education, a goal he outlined in a 2022 rally in Uttar Pradesh.
