RG Kar Case News

The junior doctors in West Bengal have called off their 16-day hunger strike after a meeting with CM Mamata Banerjee. Reportedly, the agitating doctors who have been on a 'fast-unto-death' strike for the past 16 days have decided to call off after meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Bangerjee's agreeing to the demands. The meeting lasted over two hours and the doctors expressed their major concerns owing to RG Kar doctor rape and murder case including the 'threat' culture in several government/ private hospitals in the state.

"At RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, doctors were suspended without the implementation of procedures and rules. Students cannot be suspended based on these complaints. Who gave the college authorities the right to take such a step without informing the state government? Isn't this a threat culture?" said the CM of West Bengal, as reported by TOI.

The stike has been continued for past 17 days seeking justice for the RG Kar case and a demand for systematic changes in the healthcare infrastructure.

As per the latest event, six doctors have been hospitalized due to fast and health issues as a part of the hunger strike. The protesting doctors were supported by colleagues from across West Bengal and India by organizing a strike of all medical professionals.

Other demands of the doctors on strike include inducting a centralised referral system for all hospitals and medical colleges, forming task forces to ensure essential provisions for CCTV, and implementing a bed vacancy monitoring system and washrooms at their workplaces.
