RML Director becomes VC of KGMU Lucknow

RML Director Prof Soniya Nityanand is appointed as the Vice Chancellor of KGMU Medical University Lucknow.

Prof Soniya Nityanand, presently RML Director, has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of KGMU Medical University Lucknow. Governor Anandiben Patel nominated her to become the 12th VC of the medical university.

An official order has been issued by the governor and chancellor that said, she will be the VC of KGMU for a period of three years.

Prof Nityanand has replaced Lt. Gen (Dr.) Bipin Puri, PVSM, VSM (retired) who was appointed three years ago. His term ends on August 11, 2023. Prof Nityanand is currently the Director of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences.

About Prof Soniya Nityanand

She is the second woman Vice-Chancellor of KGMU. Professor Saroj Chooramani Gopal was the first one who served between March 2008 and February 2011.

She is also an alumna of the same medical college. She obtained her graduate and postgraduate degrees from KGMU and even served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of immunology at KGMU. Later, she joined the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences and rose to the level of head of department later. 

In the year 2021, she was appointed as the Director of Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences.

She is the daughter of Padmashri Dr Nityanand who developed the Contraceptive Pills Saheli and was a renowned scientist at the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI). 

She herself has been honoured with many awards including the National Biosciences Career Award for the Department of Biotechnology 2003-04, the Young Scientist Award by the Indian National Science Academy in 1990, Dr. JC Patel and BC Mehta Award by the Association of Physicians of India in 2000, and Dr. NN Gupta Gold Medal for Best Medical Student Chancellor's Medal etc.
